Brandon Phillips: Former Professional Baseball Second Baseman Signs with Boston Red Sox

All-Star and Gold Glover Makes Return to Major League Baseball

Raleigh, NC native joins Red Sox organization after spending 2018 season in minors

Brandon Emil Phillips, born June 28, 1981, in Raleigh, North Carolina, is a former professional baseball second baseman who has signed with the Boston Red Sox for the 2019 season. A three-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glover, Phillips played in Major League Baseball for several teams, including the Cincinnati Reds, Atlanta Braves, and Los Angeles Angels.

Phillips spent the entire 2018 season in the minors after being released by the Angels. However, he has remained in shape and received a non-roster invitation to spring training with the Red Sox. The 37-year-old veteran will compete for a spot on the Red Sox's 25-man roster, adding depth and experience to their infield.

Phillips is known for his strong defense and offensive versatility. He has a career batting average of .275 with 182 home runs and 875 RBIs. Phillips is also a three-time Silver Slugger Award winner and was named the Gold Glove Award winner at second base in 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014.

The addition of Phillips gives the Red Sox a valuable veteran presence and a potential upgrade at second base. The Red Sox are expected to contend for a World Series title in 2019, and Phillips' experience and leadership could be a key factor in their success.
